Develop a sense of your core values – know the difference from envy to inspiration

Think of someone that you truly admire. Not someone you love, depend on or take care of, but someone you wish you were more like. What are three qualities about that person that you admire? Are these qualities part of your core values? What can you do to nurture these qualities in your life?

At a recent beach yoga class, there was a male student to my left that was getting warmed up prior to class starting. He expertly flowed into a series of elaborate, intense and precise transitions into and out of handstands, even on the very soft and uneven surface of the beach sand he did not fall once. My first instinct was “Dang what a cocky showoff.” Then I began to look deeper and think about what I was really feeling. As I followed the trail, the path lead to the dark, destructive emotion of “Envy.” Nothing ever positive comes from this emotion and it seems to shine a bright spot light on our own insecurities. I thought what if I could replace my feelings of jealousy and inadequacies with “admiration” instead. Instead of showing my what a lack, what if I allowed this student to show me what was possible to achieve? It changed my perspective to this individual and my entire mode changed.

I you have someone in your life that you can never please, no matter what you do, you can never please or make happy… It is a sign to STOP trying… The unhappiness is not a projection of your actions, but instead a reflection of the lack of worth that person feels for themselves.

It is very common that due to our own lack of self-worth, many find ourselves attracted someone completely opposite of ourselves. We enter into a relationship and then find ourselves frustrated by our differences. We may spend the rest of our time together trying to change them to be more like ourselves only in the end, realizing that the only person we had the power to change was ourselves..

Focus on the people who inspire you, not the ones who annoy you. Attract the people into your your life that share your core values and do not distract you from them.

We don't need someone who only sees the good in us. We need someone who sees all of who we actually are and loves us just the same.

Don't look for someone who'll solve all your problems. Look for someone who won't let you face them alone.
